History

Our story begins in Liberia, West Africa. We witnessed firsthand the devastation and suffering caused by the 14 year civil war that would claim the lives of 10% of the population. 40,000 of Liberia’s children were involved in the war, many kidnapped, abused, and coerced to fight or help the rebels, or be killed.

We began in 1997 by opening a school in the capital city of Monrovia. We provided 125 children with an alternative to fighting through free education, food, and counseling. We now focus on education for children and adults and we are developing a computer based education process.  We serve around 500 children in Liberia.

In 2007, we began partnering with Hosanna Ministries, an Indian ministry, to support the Gnyan Sampada Residential School, in rural central India.  Children come from the surrounding area to attend our English-speaking school. If they were not in school, they would most likely join their parents doing intensive labor, such as picking cotton or making bricks by hand.  We also offer sewing and computer classes in the evening.

In 2017, Hosanna Ministries began serving women and children in Mumbai. Many women and children live in the slums and earn a meager living by picking rags from the dump and selling them. They are vulnerable to human trafficking, disease, and malnutrition. We offer sewing classes for women to help them better provide for their families and a day school with a meal for children who would otherwise have no hope of education. We also offer classes teaching computer skills.

In 2017 Serve the Children partnered with Pure Nard Ministries. Pure Nard Ministries is located in Mungu, a rural community south of the nation’s capital, Lusaka. The preschool has three classes; a baby class (3-year olds), a middle class (4 and 5-year olds), and a reception (which we know as kindergarten, for 6 and 7-year olds). It is an English-medium school, giving a head-start for some of the world’s poorest as they gain school readiness. The school serves its children and their families by providing an education, but it also serves the community by providing a meal for students and by drawing families into the church. Future goals for the school include adding classes up to grade seven, preparing students for the grade seven exams and secondary school.

Serve the Children today reaches more than 800 children annually. CLICK HERE to read more about how we work.
